The majority of the House of Representative's New York delegation has called on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to step down amid a slew of recent sexual misconduct allegations.

Schumer also said that the "multiple, credible" allegations meant that Cuomo had lost his ability to govern.

"He has lost the faith of his fellow leaders around the state, and I think he's increasingly losing the faith of the people", the mayor said at a press conference.

President Joe Biden has also not said that he believes the governor, a long-time friend and ally, should step aside. "I did not do what has been alleged", the 63-year-old Democrat said on a call to reporters, referring to accusations made by six women since February.

Cuomo has apologized for his past behaviors, but has dismissed calls for him to resign. "Governor Cuomo should resign". Independent investigations by the Attorney General and the New York State Assembly must continue to uncover all the facts - but as more and more disturbing allegations continue to be made every day, it has become obvious that he is unable to govern effectively at this time.

New York, March 13 (IANS) New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has reiterated that he is not going to resign despite mounting pressure for him to do so and start of an impeachment inquiry from the lower house of the state legislature. That will run parallel to an investigation led by the office the New York State Attorney General Letitia James.

He attacked the lawmakers who called for his resignation, which also include 50 Democratic state legislators. "And I've always separated the two", he said, refusing to resign. The governor said that he would not bow down to "cancel culture", in which a person is subjected to ostracization.

Nadler claimed Cuomo had "lost the confidence of the people of New York" in his statement issued as part of the coordinated effort by the state's congressional delegation.

Winning his third term in November 2018, Cuomo has not made public statement on the latest development and he recently said "there is no way" for him to step down over sexual harassment allegations.

The firestorm grew after the Times Union of Albany reported Wednesday that an unidentified aide had claimed Cuomo reached under her shirt and fondled her at his official residence late previous year.

Bakeman told Intelligencer that she believes Cuomo frequently uses touching and sexual innuendo to stoke fear in women, meeting "the textbook definition of sexual harassment".

The latest accusation, reported Wednesday in the Times Union newspaper in state capital Albany, appears more serious than previous claims.

"People know the difference between playing politics, bowing to cancel culture, and the truth", Cuomo said.

"I guess Cuomo still has one defender in the wake of -sexual harassment charges --avoidable nursing home deaths --unsafely built bridges -cover-ups galore -etc etc How much more evidence do you need?" the former Sex and the City star asked, referencing Council Speaker Corey Johnson, who is running for city comptroller. But I can tell you as a former attorney general who has gone through this situation many times, there are often many motivations for making an allegation.

The state Assembly allowed an impeachment investigation into Cuomo on Thursday as lawmakers investigate whether there are grounds for his forcible removal from office.

Peoples reported from New York City.

Cuomo is accused of undercounting the number of COVID-related deaths at nursing homes after ordering the facilities to take in patients who had been infected by the virus.
