Scotland Yard is facing an investigation by the police watchdog into its handling of an allegation of indecent exposure involving the suspect in the Sarah Everard case.

Ms Everard went missing in London over a week ago when she was walking home from her friend's house.

Asst Commissioner Ephgrave said a Met Police officer aged in his 40s who was arrested on Tuesday remains in custody on suspicion of her murder.

The London police force has said the officer, who works for the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, had not been on duty the night Everard disappeared.

Wayne Couzens, 48, has been charged with murder.

Writing in the Guardian, columnist Gaby Hinsliff said: "When she went missing, any woman who has ever walked home alone at night felt that grim, instinctive sense of recognition".

Women should find another way to pay tribute to Sarah Everard rather than an in-person vigil, Scottish health secretary Jeane Freeman has said. Men have also joined in on the conversation, asking women what they could do to help make women feel safer when walking alone.

Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister of Scotland, was among the thousands of people to retweet McCann's message. We believe that streets should be safe for all women*.

The event was due to take place at Clapham Common bandstand, close to where Ms Everard went missing, at 6pm on Saturday.

"It's time for women to fight back, to take control, to lead the way out of this nightmare that has lasted the entire span of human history".

"I can't sit there and try to assess which guy is the good guy and which one is not - it's for you guys to change your behavior and the way you act in public spaces", Ali said. It isn't about what we wear.

One of the organisers, Anna Birley, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that organisation of the vigil began on Wednesday and the group had "proactively" contacted Lambeth Council and the Metropolitan Police.

He added: "It may well be that there will be further communication between the claimants and the solicitors they instruct and the police to deal with the application of the regulations and (the rights to freedom of expression and assembly) to this particular event".

"Sarah was bright and handsome - a wonderful daughter and sister". She was kind and thoughtful, caring and dependable. She would always put others first and had the most awesome sense of humour.

"Throughout the pandemic, we have consistently enforced the Covid regulations and have made hard decisions during a range of gatherings on issues about which people have felt very strongly". We need a political settlement that makes it impossible for decisions to be made that fail to recognise that while men and women are equal, they have very different life experiences.

If you have any information which could assist police in their investigation of Sarah's disappearance, contact the Incident Room on 0208 785 8244 or visit the Major Incident Portal.
