Across most of the Lower 48 states, those early winter sunsets before 5 p.m. would become a thing of the past.

Since the time on most cable boxes, computers, cell phones and cars sets automatically, Daylight Saving Time is not as much of a hassle as it used to be.

Several U.S. senators, including Florida Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio, have reintroduced a bill that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent across the country.

Irwin - a longtime proponent of stopping the time change - said in a statement Wednesday that studies have shown changing the clocks leads to increased accidents, higher rates of strokes and heart attacks and decreased productivity. That's when we "fall back", or turn the clocks back one hour and "gain" that hour of sleep back.

DST has roots tracing to 1918 in the United States, though not all places always observed it.

Ryan, the fictional repulsive-staffer-turned-congressman played by Timothy Simons in "Veep", who rose to fame for his passionate campaign to end turning back the clocks, took a page from real-world arguments when he delivered a floor speech in the satirical TV series.

Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday, March 14, and lasts until Sunday, November 7. Its origins dates back to World War I as a wartime effort to conserve fuel; in fact, it was first implemented in Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, foes of the USA and its allies in that conflict. There are also broader benefits to the economy, especially within the agricultural industry.

Year-round DST would only shift daylight from the morning to the evening, meaning the sun would rise and set an hour later than we're used to from November to March. "I'm proud to reintroduce this bipartisan bill to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, and give our nation's families more stability throughout the year".

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, at least 28 states have considered legislation addressing daylight saving time, most of which would establish daylight saving time as the official time year-round. In Fairbanks, Alaska, the sun doesn't rise until almost 11 a.m.in December, yet residents there still manage to trek to school and work in the dark.
