Trump, RNC clash over using his name in fundraising

Trump Scott SPLIT Trump asks GOP groups to stop fundraising using his name: Reports

Trump, who is said to be considering starting a new political party, issued a statement Tuesday warning donors of "RINOs", or Republicans in name only, and "fools".

Former US President Donald Trump has asked three Republican organisations to stop using his name and likeness to raise money, a Trump adviser told the Reuters news agency on Saturday, confirming an earlier report by US news outlet Politico.

The party also argued it had "every right to refer to public figures as it engages in core, First Amendment-protected political speech".

Since the impeachment trial, where a handful of party members voted against their former leader, the Republican Party has been struggling to put a lid on the bubbling civil war inside the party.

Former President Donald Trump is appealing directly to his supporters to send money to his PAC and not to "RINOS".

The adviser said Trump is sensitive to the use of his name and likeness for branding purposes and was irked that the three groups have supported Republican lawmakers who joined Democrats in voting to impeach him over the January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump protesters.

The statement comes a day after RNC chief counsel Justin Riemer sent a letter to Trump's attorney, Alex Cannon, pushing back on a cease-and-desist demand to stop using the former president's name and likeness in the committee's fundraising appeals. But Trump, who made his fortune in licensing, appears to want to control the use of his name and image.

Spokesman Jason Miller didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

The letter indicated Trump would participate in the party's donor retreat scheduled for next month in Palm Beach, Florida, which is home to Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort. That includes exacting revenge by backing challengers to Republican incumbents who crossed him by voting to impeach him for inciting the Capitol riot.
