Ministry of Health Malaysia has found the first two cases of individuals infected with the Nigerian Variant of SARS-CoV-2, also known as B1.525, in Malaysia.

The infection rate for the Southwestern region stands at 39.2 cases per 100,000 of population.

In an email to MyStratfordNow.com, an SPH official says the variant is B.1.1.7., which was originally discovered in the UK. About 24% of cases are in Florida.

PHE said the latest identified variant, also known as B.1.1.318, contains the E484K mutation, found in two other VUIs in the United Kingdom, but it does not feature the N501Y mutation that is present in all VOCs.

A third case has also been identified in the UK.

Variants of Covid-19 can be identified as VUIs or "variants of concern" (VOCs).

Hancock said: "The best evidence is that this person stayed at home and there is no evidence of onward transmission".

It is among a total of four variants of concern being tracked by scientists in the UK.

Speaking in the Lords, he said the country "must be on the balls of its feet" to be ready for such "unhelpful news".

In England, two of the cases are from the same household in South Gloucestershire who tested positive after someone returned from Brazil on 10 February.

New vaccines, particularly "tweaks" of existing products, are already in the development pipeline, but their necessity raises the prospect of long-term repeat-vaccination programs being needed for some time to come.

Britain said it had located a previously-unidentified person who tested positive for a highly transmissible variant of coronavirus first found in northern Brazil, and that there was no evidence the person had spread the virus.

Malaysia has reported a total of 307,943 coronavirus cases, with 1,153 deaths.
