A strong 7.2 magnitude quake struck off the east of New Zealand's North Island on Friday, prompting a tsunami warning that was later withdrawn, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) said, although residents were asked to stay alert. It's triggered a tsunami warning.

The severity of currents and surges will vary within a particular coastal area and over the period this warning is in effect.

Strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges near the shore are expected in the following areas.

The National Emergency Management Agency and GNS Science are assessing the natural disaster parameters to determine if there is a tsunami risk to New Zealand, says the NZ Civil Defence.

It measured the quake at magnitude 7.3.

Local civil defence authorities said the tsunami threat would continue for several hours.

"At the moment, the whole township is being evacuated and now we're just going up to higher ground and waiting for Civil Defence to get in touch with us".

In the minutes following the quake, more than 50,000 people reported feeling it on Geonet.

The natural disaster was originally reported as a 7.4m quake, then downgraded. No mobile alert would be issued because there was no threat to life on the land away from the shore, Ball said.

"You may return home if you have evacuated", it said on Facebook.

People across New Zealand were woken by an emergency notification on their phones this morning activated by the government agency overseeing the unfolding tsunami threat.

New Zealand's disaster agency said shortly afterwards that flooding is expected in a 100-mile coastal stretch from Cape Runaway to Tolaga Bay.

This warning will remain in effect until a cancellation message is issued by the National Emergency Management Agency.
