Gregg Popovich on Texas lifting mask mandate: 'This is really ridiculous'

AUSTIN TX- MAY 18 Texas Governor Greg Abbott announces the reopening of more Texas businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic at a press conference at the Texas State Capitol Texas Governor Lifts Mask Mandate, Opening State "100 Percent"

Greg Abbott completely lifted the state's mask mandate on Tuesday despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich isn't happy about it.

While there has been plenty of pressure placed on Abbott to start opening up the state, his move on Tuesday is one many Texas officials and health experts believe is a unsafe one - something that Popovich believes is very premature and will undoubtedly lead to more cases and deaths. "Every business that wants to be open should be open", he added.

Shortly after Mr Abbott's announcement, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said he would do the same in an even shorter time frame. "Now more than 7 million vaccine shots have already been given to Texans ..." More than 6,000 people were hospitalized in Texas with COVID-19 on Tuesday alone.

What about other USA states?

The Hays County Local Health Department has recorded 16,399 total COVID-19 cases and 221 coronavirus-related fatalities.

The decision puts Texas in conflict with U.S. President Joe Biden, a Democrat who has urged Americans to keep taking COVID-19 precautions, including wearing masks, until vaccinations have fully tamped down the virus.

"Unless otherwise prohibited from doing so by the state, I would expect masks to be required in any shared spaces at all Waco ISD campuses and other facilities through at least the end of this school year". The district is awaiting further guidance from the Texas Education Agency.

Businesses are able to limit capacity or implement additional safety protocols if they choose to do so. And the people that didn't want to wear masks in the first place, how do the businesses get them to wear masks?

"Now, despite these changes, remember this: removing state mandates does not end personal responsibility or the importance of caring for your family members and caring for your friends and caring for others in your community".

"Covid has not suddenly disappeared", he added, "but state mandates are no longer needed".

As of Tuesday, 35 USA states, along with the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, still mandate that residents wear face masks in public.
