Beto O'Rourke, a Democrat who lost to Cruz in the 2018 Texas race for U.S. Senate, called out his former opponent during an appearance on MSNBC Thursday for "vacationing in Cancun right now when people are literally freezing to death in the state that he was elected to represent".

On Thursday, after speculation regarding Cruz's trip was confirmed and the senator was absolutely destroyed by Twitter users, the Texas politician took a flight back to Houston.

Critics slammed the senator on Twitter after photos emerged on social media of a man who appears to be Cruz aboard a plane.

Residents who have been without water, power or heat for days faced further delays to the restoration of their supplies, and the coronavirus vaccination programme was largely put on hold.

Cruz did not immediately confirm or respond to the reports of his jaunt.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said that if Cruz resigned after the Capitol riot as she had demanded, he "could've taken his vacation in peace".
