Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was admitted to a London hospital, Buckingham Palace announced Wednesday.

They said the Duke had been "feeling unwell for a short period and the doctor was called".

Both Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth, 94, received their first COVID-19 vaccinations in January.

The statement from the palace revealed he was likely to stay in hospital for a few days of rest and observation.

A palace spokesman said: "His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to the King Edward VII Hospital in London, on Tuesday evening".

The Duke spent two nights at the King Edward VII hospital as a precautionary measure on the advice of a doctor, which meant he missed the State Opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot.

At the time, the palace confirmed to Fox News he "walked into the hospital unaided" and "did not take an ambulance" to get to the facility, the rep said. In January 2019, he was involved in a vehicle crash, attending hospital as a precaution, and surrendered his driver's licence.

Prince Philip and the Queen had their coronavirus vaccine jabs in January.

Philip, who will turn 100 in June, has been plagued by health issues in recent years.

Philip spent four nights at King Edward Hospital in December 2019, where he was treated for what was described as a "pre-existing condition" and though he was discharged on Christmas Eve that year, he has not been seen in public since.

He abruptly canceled his appearance at the traditional Maundy church service that he was scheduled to attend with the monarch in March 2018. He retired from public duties in August 2017.

In 2019, the Duke of Edinburgh was involved in a auto crash when he attempted to pull out of a driveway near the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.
