Ontario's daily COVID-19 cases fall below 900, first time since October

Ontario reports 1868 new COVID-19 cases as stay-at-home order lifts in 27 public health units Ontario reports 904 COVID-19 cases

Ontario's premier defended the lifting of a stay-home order for the majority of the province's regions Tuesday despite warnings it could lead to a third wave.

The top doctor of one of these COVID-19 hotspots says the region's restrictions should remain "status quo" as cases plateau.

"We aren't reopening the province", Ford said as Ontario's legislature began its spring session. "But we won't hesitate to pull on the brakes at any given time".

Though unclear at the moment, the GTA hotspots are poised to exit a stay-at-home order and return to the province's colour-coded public health restriction framework on February 22 - and the timing has given rise to concern from local health officials.

The rest of the regions, majority outside the Greater Toronto Area, fall elsewhere along the scale that moves from red - the second-most strict level - through green, with lighter restrictions on businesses and gatherings at each stage.

She says there are 170 new cases in Peel Region, and 131 in York Region.

Three health units - Hastings Prince Edward; Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington; and Renfrew County - returned to the green zone of the framework last week.

"It seems pretty clear that what this is all about is transitioning into a disaster", Horwath said.

As of February 16, in publicly funded schools in Ontario, there are 22 new school-related student cases (for a total of 5,285) one new school-related staff cases (for a total of 1,125), and no new cases in an "individual not identified" (for a total of 1,125); 110 schools have a reported case, and four school are now closed.

Health officials have called the fast-spreading variant a "significant threat" and noted that it may impact Ontario's lockdown measures.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said over 34,000 tests were completed and 489,484 doses of the COVID-19 vaccines have been administered.

Officials in both Ontario and Quebec expressed concern over variants on Sunday, even as their provinces reported fewer than 1,000 new cases each.

The province is also reporting 1,456 newly resolved cases and 10 additional deaths.

As Toronto, Peel, and York Regions continue to represent a significant portion of Ontario's daily COVID-19 case counts, it might be worth examining in what state these public health units are now in.
