COVID-19 cases ticking up after slow drop: Henry

B.C.’s COVID-19 updates for Feb. 16 B.C.’s COVID-19 updates for Feb. 16

Locally, Linn County added 31 new virus cases on Tuesday, bringing the county total to 19,130.

Across British Columbia, there were 1,533 cases recorded over the weekend.

Provincial health officer Bonnie Henry told media February 16 that while the pace of new infections "is lower than it was a few weeks ago, it is still very high, much higher than we want it to be".

There are now 4,189 active cases in the province and 231 people in hospital with the virus, and 74 of those people are in intensive care.

Public health experts say another thing to look out for is the reason behind the recent drop in COIVD-19 cases and hospitalizations.

There has now been a total of 3,980 Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland.

In terms of the vaccine, as of February 13th, 268,551 doses have been administered in Ireland. It is the longest state of emergency in B.C.'s history and is approaching one year since it was implemented.

The Department of Health has been notified of 33 additional deaths, relating to Covid-19.

Nearly two-thirds of today's new cases are from the Greater Toronto Area, including 320 new cases in Toronto, 154 new cases in Peel and 118 new positives in York Region. That applies to Phase 2-eligible residents, including healthcare workers, first responders, long-term care residents and staff, congregate care residents and staff and people 75-years-old or older.

While COVID-19 cases have been trending downwards, the last four days have shown an uptick in transmission, particularly in the Fraser Health region. One relative told Loop News, on learning of this newest update, "This is getting so confusing".

New community outbreaks include ones at Timothy Christian School in Chilliwack, and at the SFU Childcare Society.

Ehresmann earlier this month said contact tracers have been interviewing more than 80% of people with diagnosed COVID-19, but "they really don't know where they got it and/or they are unwilling to give us more specific information about their activities".
