Powerful quake hits Japan near Fukushima

M7.1 earthquake strikes off Fukushima, Japan Powerful undersea earthquake strikes near Japan’s destroyed Fukushima nuclear site; no tsunami threat

A magnitude-7.1 quake struck off Japan's Fukushima Prefecture at 11:08 p.m. local time (1408 GMT) on Saturday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake was centered about 60 kilometers (37 miles) beneath the ocean bed.

Tremors were also felt in Tokyo, to the southwest.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said there were no irregularities at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, which experienced meltdowns following a massive quake and tsunami 10 years ago.

Kato said the plant was being inspected but there was "no concern of a damage-causing tsunami" and "no anomalies" had been reported at the site.

In Minami Soma, one of the Fukushima villages evacuated after the nuclear disaster in 2011, NHK, the public broadcaster, reported that severe horizontal shaking lasted for about 30 seconds.

There were no immediate reports of significant damage, though local news broadcast images of a landslide on a highway.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato addressed reporters after midnight and said evaluations were under way.

There have been no reported casualties, officials said, but nearly one million homes in the region are without power.

Aerial footage broadcast by NHK showed a hillside that collapsed onto a highway in Fukushima region, severing the road.

Almost 10 years ago on March 11, 2011, three nuclear reactors in Fukushima melted down after a quake and tsunami in the area, killing more than 18,000 people. Experts are warning of aftershocks over the next several days, including possibly larger quakes.

Some people were taking shelter at evacuation centres, and were being warned to practice social distancing because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Japan is one of the world's most seismically active areas, and it accounts for roughly 20 per cent of the world's earthquakes that are magnitude 6 or greater.
