As we reported a moment ago, a study shows the Oxford vaccine may reduce transmission. At the time, United Kingdom authorities said that after three weeks, the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was around 70% effective up until the second dose, even if that was 12 weeks later.

Moreover, for those who received a second standard dose of vaccine at 12 or more weeks after the first dose, vaccine efficacy was 82.4% (95% CI 62.7%-91.7%).

This vaccine is based on the AstraZeneca/University of Oxford vaccine.

The researchers hope to report data regarding the new variants in the coming days, and expect the findings to be broadly similar to those already reported by fellow vaccine developers.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine significantly reduces virus transmission and is highly protective after a single dose, according to an Oxford University study, which the British government said Wednesday vindicated its inoculation strategy.

The top French health authority on Tuesday cleared AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine for use, but advised against giving it to people over 65.

The data from the study by the University of Oxford, which has not yet been peer reviewed, supports the four to 12-week prime-boost dosing interval that many global regulators, including the UK's, have recommended.

If things go well over the next month then the appropriate moment for the PM to take off the handcuffs could come as early as Tuesday March 23, the anniversary of the first lockdown.

It recommends up to three-month intervals between the two doses.

The Oxford Vaccine Trial results, now under review to be published by the "The Lancet", also found that up to a three-month interval between the two required doses of the jab proved an effective gap as protection against the deadly virus. The vaccines are being provided as part of Dubai's comprehensive vaccination drive launched in December 2020.

The team stresses that the new data show people are protected for a certain period after a single dose of the vaccine.

"These two situations provide an opportunity to explore the immunogenicity and efficacy of a single dose of vaccine, and the impact of an extended interval before delivery of the second dose".

The EMA said last week there were not yet enough results for people over the age of 55 to determine how well the vaccine worked in that group but it said it could still be given to older people.

In the updated analysis, no additional hospitalisations or severe cases from 10 days after the first dose were seen in the group that received the vaccine, compared with a total of 22 in the control group.
