Based on earlier statements from the provincial government, residents of Ontario have been expecting our harsh iteration of lockdown to ease up when daily new COVID-19 case counts in the province reach around 1,000.

It's laid out a six-point plan to keep a closer eye on the variants in the community and slow community transmission.

There's now a six-point plan to deal with the spread of the COVID-19 variants in Ontario.

Evidence shows that the United Kingdom variant could be up to 56-percent more transmissible.

Recent evidence shows Ontario's Stay at Home orders are causing cases to trend downwards. Ontario has detected 52 cases of the particularly concerning variant first discovered in the United Kingdom since December 26.

In order to track different variants of COVID-19, the government is increasing lab capacity to test the incoming samples.

"I believe that imposing these new travel restrictions will help".

The three primary variants of concern that are being monitored globally are the UK, South African and Brazil variants. Provincial labs will begin that initiative February 3, with the goal of screening all positive tests in the province. So far there are 51 confirmed cases of the UK COVID-19 variant in Ontario. PHO will also undertake and coordinate genomic sequencing efforts to identify new and emerging variants by sequencing up to 10 percent of all positive tests by February 17. The province is also introducing a provincial antigen screening program for the expansion of rapid testing in high priority settings, such as long-term care homes, retirement homes, essential workplaces, schools and congregate living settings.

To strengthen case and contact management, the government is asking asymptomatic contacts of confirmed cases to get retested after day 10 of their quarantine. This will enhance the province's capacity to identify known and emerging variants of COVID-19.
