UN Chief: Vaccine Hoarding in High-Income Countries Puts Africa at Risk

Covax has struck agreements with manufacturers for two billion vaccine doses Time to get the jab, but can Covid-19 vaccines be mixed and matched?

Vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are meant to be administered in two doses given three or four weeks apart, respectively, but the CDC updates its guidance, saying the second dose can be given up to six weeks after the initial dose.

Last month, Moderna also began a study to test its vaccine, which uses a similar technology as the Pfizer vaccine, in adolescents aged 12 to less than 18.

Asked about how many vaccine doses all manufacturers might be able to produce this year, Gavi chief executive Seth Berkley said: "I think we're talking about numbers in the range of six to seven billion doses".

Developing countries should have "the same access to vaccines as the rest of the world", Pfizer chairman Albert Bourla told a virtual press conference.

It noted that the rates at which anaphylaxis is reported following vaccination is likely to change as more vaccine doses are given.

'In exceptional situations in which the first-dose vaccine product can not be determined or is no longer available, any available mRNA COVID-19 vaccine may be administered at a minimum interval of 28 days between doses'. In an updated forecast published on Thursday, COVAX said it planned to deliver almost two billion doses to 92 countries this year, covering over a quarter of their populations.

The WHO said earlier this week it planned to deliver 135 million vaccines in the first quarter of 2021, without giving a breakdown by supplier.

Earlier this week, WHO Director General Tedros Ghebreyesus had criticized vaccine manufacturers for seeking profit by enabling wealthier countries to buy up the available supply of vaccines.

COVAX is a global initiative coordinated by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the World Health Organization (WHO), to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines for all countries.

In an updated forecast published on Thursday, COVAX said it planned to deliver almost 2 billion doses to 92 countries this year, covering over a quarter of their populations.

"But we can only end the pandemic anywhere if we end it everywhere".
