Sask. premier reacts after Biden cancels Keystone XL permit

Justin Trudeau Keystone XL Pipeline “That's not how you treat a friend and ally" - Alberta Premier Kenney

With the prime minister scheduled to speak with U.S. President Joe Biden Friday, Alberta's premier is pushing for stronger action on the Keystone XL pipeline.

The two countries still have a great deal in common in the Biden era, particularly when it comes to a shared vision of tackling climate change while fuelling economic growth, Trudeau said.

"This doesn't mean that everything is going to be fine with the United States, there are definitely going to be challenges", he added.

The scheduled conversation will mark Biden's first official phone call with a foreign leader as US president, and thus, Trudeau's first chance to bring up the cancellation of a project viewed as vital to Canada's energy sector.

"Obviously the decision on Keystone XL is a very hard one for workers in Alberta and Saskatchewan who've had many hard hits", the prime minister said.

President Joe Biden signs his first executive orders in the Oval Office of the White House on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, in Washington, including an order revoking the presidential permit granted to the contentious Keystone XL oil pipeline.

During a press conference on Friday, Trudeau said Canada is in a situation where "we are much more aligned on values, on focus, on work that needs to be done on giving opportunities to everyone while we build a better future".

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney is accusing Mr. Trudeau of offering too mild a response to the Biden decision.

That same day, Canada's ambassador to the U.S., Trudeau-appointee Kirsten Hillman, also said Canada should give up on Keystone and move on.

The Premier complained, "That's not how you treat a friend and ally".

"At the very least, I call upon the government of Canada to press the US Administration to compensate TC Energy, and the Alberta government, for billions of dollars of cost incurred in the construction of Keystone XL to date", Kenney's letter said.

As word emerged this week of the project's imminent demise, Calgary-based owner TC Energy revealed plans to spend US$1.7 billion on a solar, wind and battery-powered operating system for the pipeline to ensure it achieves net-zero emissions by 2030. That decision will result in about 1,000 job losses, according to the company.

Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, have also said in the past they would put an end to fracking, a promise they did not repeat during the campaign.
