12 cases have reportedly been detect among residents, with a number of staff also testing positive. Typically, the nursing home employs 75 people.

"Despite heroic efforts by our staff, we can confirm that our nursing home has registered an outbreak of COVID-19".

In addition to this, 33 staff members have also contracted the virus.

He explained that residents who have not tested positive for the virus have now been separated from the infected cohort.

'It has been devastating for everyone on the staff who have tirelessly and who have developed very close relationships with residents whom they have grown to love.

Mr Brennan wanted to reassure people that his staff that we are working around the clock to ensure that all residents are protected and that "we have the minimum fallout from this event".

The large COVID-19 outbreak occurred at Droimnin Nursing Home in Stradbally, Co Laois.

'To the whole community of Stradbally, it has been a devastating blow.

Tadhg Daly, Chief Executive of Nursing Homes Ireland confirmed there are "in excess" of 100 active outbreaks in nursing homes around the country.

"On behalf of council, I am pleased to report that the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will be arriving this week and are designated for our nursing home residents and staff", said Ogimaa Duke Peltier, in a press release.

"Outbreaks are not a contraindication for vaccination; rather, it is appropriate to vaccinate in nursing homes with outbreaks, subject to local public health input".

Six residents of a Laois nursing home have died in the past week after contracting Covid-19, just days before residents at the facility were to receive their first dose of the vaccine.

The HSE run facility cares for around 80 long term care residents.

"In such cases, vaccination teams will be guided by Public Health advice and Infection Prevention & Control advice so as to act in the best interests of residents".

COVID-19 vaccines were due to get underway in the nursing home next week but have now been postponed due to the outbreak.
