Parler Social Network Sues Amazon After Ban

Apple said in a statement Saturday that "We have suspended Parler from the App Store until they resolve these issues".

The existential problems for Parler come as federal law enforcement continues to make arrests related to the violent January 6 intrusion of the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump rioters.

Parler was eventually kicked from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, meaning the app is unavailable for download on the two most widely used smartphone operating systems.

Parler CEO John Matze said on Sunday in a Fox News interview that, "Every vendor from text message services to email providers to our lawyers all ditched us too".

Parler, a social networking service favored by many supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump, sued Amazon.com Inc on Monday, accusing its Web hosting service of violating antitrust law by suspending its account.

Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Parler is now seeking a temporary restraining order to keep Amazon Web Services from blackballing Parler. But it was admonished later in the day by Judge Barbara Rothstein of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, who wrote that Parler had failed to properly serve court papers to Amazon and ordered it to do so.

"We've seen this coming for a while", Ben Decker, founder and CEO of Memetica, a company that provides intelligence and risk advisory services regarding harassment, disinformation, and violent extremism, told ABC News. That's not what the Constitution stands for, banning 10-plus million US voters from the internet, barring people from free speech, ' he said to Fox News. Posts on the social media platform were part of the long trail of digital evidence available to investigators.

"I think what we're seeing with Parler, with Twitter, with social media is that there is kind of a lack of understanding of the concept of the first amendment among many Americans", said Andrew Selepak, a social media professor at the University of Florida.

"If this wasn't done, we would only have fragments and scraps of the information that was on Parler before the takedown", said Gabriella Coleman, an anthropologist at McGill University who has studied hacker movements.

Disinformation researchers said far-right groups that appeared at the riot maintained a vigorous online presence on alternative platforms including Parler where they spread violent rhetoric and organized ahead of the unrest.
