Ontario health officials are reporting a one-day drop in the number of new COVID-19 cases with fewer than 3,000 reported, but the positivity rate remains high.

The new modelling shows that Ontario's long-term care sector continues to be devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic and ICU occupancy is increasing with "real consequences for health".

Since yesterday, 118 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and 22 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.

Public Health Ontario says 44,802 COVID-19 tests were completed across the province and there are 43,154 tests remain under investigation. The fatality count could double from 50 to 100 deaths a day at the end of February.

Health officials have said that when more than 300 COVID-19 patients are in intensive care, medical care in hospitals not related to the disease becomes almost impossible to handle.

Premier says he "couldn't be any clearer" as worst-case scenario predicts 15,000 cases a day. "That means more testing, faster testing, faster case management, more and faster contact tracing, more rigorous monitoring of self-isolation and quarantine, better communication - all of the things we have been trying to do for the last nine or 10 months have just become even more important".

More than half of the intensive care units in the province are full or close to full. As of January 9, the total number of long-term care residents infected with COVID-19 who have died during the second wave is 1,119.

The province said that 385 of those patients are in intensive care, and 262 of them are breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.

Front-line health workers and long-term care residents are the first priorities for vaccines, and Canada's chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said Tuesday we should start to see the impact of those groups being vaccinated within a month or two.

Officials also reported on Tuesday that 41 more people have died due to the disease, including 23 people who were residents of long-term care homes.

The science table warned that variant B.1.1.7, commonly referred to as the United Kingdom variant, could "drive much higher case counts, ICU occupancy and mortality as community transmission occurs".

The Ontario government has declared a second provincial emergency during the COVID-19 pandemic as case numbers continue to spike.

Non-essential construction is further restricted, including below-grade construction, exempting survey.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said eight of those cases were among 2,903 new cases reported Tuesday as the province braced for new public health-related restrictions.

The regions in which schools will remain closed to in-person learning are Toronto, York Region, Hamilton, Peel Region and Windsor-Essex. "They were going to adjacent regions to go shopping", she said.

"We have looked, certainly, at the measures put in place in other jurisdictions, other countries, and curfews have been put in place with multiple other measures", Yaffe said.

"I know the stay at home order is a drastic measure, one we don't take lightly".
