Earlier this week, Ireland was named as having the worst Covid-19 infection rate in all of Europe, with more than 45,000 new cases of the virus in one week; but with cases continuing to spike exponentially in nearly every county, Ireland is now the worst-hit country in the world with the disease.

In the latest measures to stem the rise in cases in the United Kingdom, the government has made it unlawful for people to leave their homes to sit outside.

As of 2.00pm, 1,692 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised - of which 158 are in ICU.

Two of the deaths occurred last month while 44 were reported in January.

Ireland is grappling a deadly wave of Covid-19 that's ripping across the country, causing surging infection rates and putting pressure on hospitals.

There are 116 people in hospital with Covid-19 at University Hospital Galway, according to the latest HSE figures.

Mr Varadkar told RTÉ Radio One's Today with Claire Byrne show that the factors included household visits, domestic travel, non-compliance, a new variant of the virus and global travel.

Attributing the rise in deaths to "unsustainably" high levels of infection, Dr Holohan called on people to stay home "out of respect for those who have lost their lives" or were in hospital.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn, said: "At least one in three patients admitted to hospital or critical care in January have been under the age of 65 years".

"We now have nearly the highest rate of Covid-19 on the planet, which is very worrying, and our rate has gone up much faster than other European countries".

There are now 703 people with the virus in hospitals across the region and 53 in intensive care units.

"We know that we speak for all health and social care staff in assuring the public that we will do everything that we possibly can to deal with the situation that is unfolding". The massive ask of everyone is to stay at house & assist get our hospitals & nursing houses again to safer amounts.

"Our healthcare teams ask just this of us". As of yesterday, 146 of them were in intensive care.

Details had been submitted to European regulators for evaluation.

He tweeted: "If approved this vaccine will allow significant scaling up of vaccination programme".
