At the time of its closure, DarkMarket had almost 500,000 users and more than 2,400 vendors.

As The Guardian reports, a 34-year-old Australian citizen who is thought to be the operator of DarkMarket has been arrested by the Central Criminal Investigation Department in the German city of Oldenburg.

Authorities say the probe that uncovered DarkMarket involved a months-long worldwide law enforcement operation.

Three hundred and twenty thousand transactions using more than 4,650 bitcoin and 12,800 monero had taken place, police said, meaning €140m (£125m) worth of purchases using cryptocurrency had been made in the time the market was online.

At current exchange rates, that represented turnover valued at 140 million euros ($170 million).

"The vendors on the marketplace mainly traded all kinds of drugs and sold counterfeit money, stolen or counterfeit credit card details, anonymous SIM cards and malware", Europol said. On 11 January, investigators shut down the marketplace's servers and seized 20 other servers in Moldova and Ukraine. They have since been shutdown, but not before investigators collected all the data they contained for further investigation, with a particular focus being placed on the moderators who worked for the marketplace.

The prime suspect was brought before a judge but declined to speak.

Europol, Europe´s police agency, played a "coordinating role". In 2019, Koblenz prosecurots announced the discovery of darknet servers hosted from a former North Atlantic Treaty Organisation bunker in a sleepy German town.

The secret "darknet" network includes websites that can be accessed only with specific software or authorisations, ensuring anonymity for users.

The Wall Street Market had 1.15 million users and 5,400 sellers of drugs, malware, and other criminal goods.

German police raided the CyberBunker's headquarters in September 2019 in Traben-Trarbach, a small town close to the Luxembourg border.

Some 121 suspects were arrested in the United States, followed by 42 in Germany, eight in the Netherlands, four in Britain, three in Austria, and one in Sweden.
