Australian FI Grand Prix in Melbourne postponed until November because of coronavirus

Top News “Why don’t we immediately view Bahrain as the beginning of the season?”

Formula One One bosses have unveiled a revamped calendar following the postponements of the Australian and Chinese Grands Prix.

The 2021 season will now begin a week later than planned, with the Bahrain Grand Prix scheduled for March 28. Despite all of the changes, the 2021 provisional calendar is still the largest ever with 23 planned races and the hope that fans will be able to return to the grandstands and the Paddock Club to cheer on the teams and drivers.

After months of speculation, it was confirmed last night that the Australian Grand Prix has been postponed until November, with all parties adamant that the event will go ahead as the third to last round of the F1 season.

F1 is expecting fans to return to the races this season after most races were held behind closed doors or in front of severely restricted numbers previous year.

The circuit's race was previously known as the San Marino Grand Prix, and it was there in 1994 that Austrian Roland Ratzenberger and three-time Formula One champion Ayrton Senna of Brazil died in crashes.

Australia's new date of November 21 means the season will be extended by one week, with the campaign closing in Abu Dhabi on December 12.

Dates for the Brazilian, Emirati and debuting Saudi Arabian Grands Prix have been moved to accommodate the Australian race.

No American races were held previous year due to the pandemic while the Netherlands, Singapore and Japan rounds were also axed.

No Chinese Grand Prix was held in 2020.

The Australian Grand Prix has traditionally been the season-opening race of the Formula 1 season.

"The global pandemic has not yet allowed life to return to normal, but we showed in 2020 that we can race safely as the first worldwide sport to return and we have the experience and plans in place to deliver on our season", Domenicali explained.

There is a vacant slot on May 2, with the Portimao circuit in Portugal among the leading candidates for that weekend.

"Discussions with the promoter and authorities in China are ongoing with the potential to reschedule the race later in the season if possible", F1 said in a statement.

Formula One said it expected fans to return to the grandstands and the exclusive Paddock Club during the 2021 season after most races were held behind closed doors previous year.
