Hong Kong's market watchdog, the Securities and Futures Commission, said it has stressed to investment banks that "any action they take should be necessary, fair, and in the best interests of investors and the public. integrity of the market, and that investors should also be properly informed, where applicable".

"We are appalled by remarks made by some overseas government officials that seemed to suggest that people with certain political beliefs should be immune to legal sanctions", the Hong Kong government said in response to the statement from the foreign ministers.

In 2019, Hong Kong was rocked by months of often violent protests demanding a more democratic government.

As the US, UK, Australia and Canada jointly condemned the mass arrests of over 50 politicians and activists in Hong Kong (HK) under Beijing's draconian National Security Law, the HK government has responded that the countries are guilty of having "double standards" by criticising the mass arrests.

Detainees included those involved in running unofficial "primaries" to select opposition candidates for elections to the Legislative Council which had been postponed from 2020 due to coronavirus. All but three have been released on bail pending further investigation. Only half the city's legislature is elected by popular vote.

'We call on the Hong Kong and Chinese central authorities to respect the legally guaranteed rights and freedoms of the people of Hong Kong without fear of arrest and detention, ' the allies said.

The office urged these politicians to recognize history and reality, abide by global law and the basic norms of worldwide relations, and immediately stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs.

NZ Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta has also commented on the Hong Kong arrests.

The delistings follow statements last week by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (Ofac) clarifying a November order from President Donald Trump that banned Americans from investing in Chinese companies that the United States considers to have links with China's military. China has sharply criticized the upcoming visit, while Taiwan's government has welcomed it.

China has condemned Australia, the USA, the United Kingdom and Canada for speaking out over the arrest of Hong Kong democracy activists, saying those nations have grossly interfered in internal affairs. "The Biden team is essentially the Obama team", Zhou said.Teng Biao, a human rights lawyer and legal scholar based in the USA, said it was infuriating and absurd to see the comparison between the two events more than three decades apart, especially from activists involved in the 1989 protests."Influential Chinese figures have been creating or spreading fake news in order to support an American president with dictatorial tendencies, this is a really worrying trend for the future of China", Teng said.
