The new model will be the first with a 13.3-inch QLED display with 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution, which can be found on a couple of Samsung's Windows 10 laptops. For its second go-round, the Galaxy Chromebook 2, Samsung made some feature tweaks to bring the price down - and hopefully improve battery life - while keeping the same premium look and feel of the original.
Starting at just $US550 ($708), the Galaxy Chromebook 2 has retained numerous original $US1,000 ($1,287) Galaxy Chromebook's best qualities while coming in at nearly half the price.
For years, Chromebooks earned a reputation as classroom mainstays, great for basic tasks like web browsing and word processing. It weighs 1.23kg, marginally heavier than the Chromebook from last year but is still quite portable and is priced from $550, which is about half the cost of its premium predecessor from last year.
Before those cuts get you down, keep in mind that the 1080p display here is the first QLED to be seen on a Chromebook, and while it won't come close to the OLED from past year, it's still a significant upgrade over offerings from other companies. The Galaxy Chromebook 2 also has a microSD card slot for additional storage. There are also two 5W speakers that utilise Smart AMP feature that Samsung state are 178% louder than an average amplifier and there is also a 720p webcam located at the top middle of the display. Last year, Samsung basically raided the Galaxy Note's assembly line and added an identical, foldable S-Pen to the Chromebook 1. Whether you're a serial streamer, devout gamer, or budding artist, this laptop takes any audiovisual experience to the next level.
The laptop can be configured with 4 or 8 GB of RAM (LPDDR3) and 64GB or 128GB of storage.
Connectivity options include ultra-fast Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth v5.0. It also comes with a new lattice keyboard that offers wider keycaps and bright backlighting. The Chromebook 2 will run on Google's Chrome OS with access for Google Play Store. The new Chromebook works very well with Samsung's Galaxy ecosystem as well. The Galaxy Chromebook 2 comes with two colour options that are Fiesta Red and Mercury Gray.
