Khan said the city was at a crisis point.

"The entirety of the health service in London is mobilising to do everything it possibly can, but the infections, the rate of growth in admissions, that is what collectively the country has got to get under control", Stevens said.

Britain on Friday reported a record 1,325 deaths over a 24 period from people testing positive for coronavirus, bringing the total number of deaths to 79,833. "The vaccine rollout has given us renewed hope, but it's critical for now we stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives." he said on Twitter Saturday.

"If we do not take immediate action now, our NHS could be overwhelmed and more people will die", Khan said in a statement. Also on Friday, the United Kingdom registered 1,325 fatalities.

Government scientific advisers believe new infections in the United Kingdom are now above 100,000 a day, comparable or exceeding the first wave in the spring - though that comparison is an estimate due to the lack of sufficient testing in the early weeks of the outbreak.

The former GP told BBC Radio 4's Today: "We still haven't seen the impact in the NHS of the rapid rise that we saw around December 28-29 after the Christmas bubble and after we started to see the new variant arriving in the region".

There are 32,294 coronavirus patients in United Kingdom hospitals on Friday across all words, including intensive care units - more than 50 per cent higher than the peak of the first wave in spring.

Sadiq Khan's declaration comes a day after the Chief Executive of NHS England, Sir Simon Stevens, said that more than 800 patients a day are being admitted to London hospitals with COVID-19. It also gives more weight to London authorities' requests to seek additional help from the government.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government is relying on an accelerated vaccine roll-out to ease pressure on the health service and return the United Kingdom back to normal.

Coronavirus cases are expected to drop in the spring due to vaccination plus the fact people spend more time outdoors, making it harder for the virus to spread.

Hospitals are also seeing far more younger people than during the first wave, scientists said.

The Office for National Statistics recently estimated as many as one in 30 Londoners has coronavirus. The figure is now thought to be "well above" that and as high as 150,000.

According to the London Assembly, the number of people in the city's hospitals grew by 27%, to 7,034, in the week up to January 6 and the number on ventilators rose 42%, to 908.

Professor Chris Whitty, who fronts the advert, says: "Covid-19, especially the new variant, is spreading quickly across the country".

Britain, the first country to approve vaccines made by Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca, on Friday approved Moderna's shot, hoping to begin administering it this spring.
