Anyone who tests positive to the virus after returning from overseas will undergo genome sequencing within 48 hours.

"As a precaution, we are ensuring that we update our guidelines in accordance with the communicable Disease Network Australia Guidance".

The NZ government also indicated there were more restrictions to come.

"That's the system the Department of Health is now installing, so we can find out whether or not we have any of those highly contagious British cases in our system", Mr McGowan said.

"They have been assessed as very, very low infection activity, but we are arranging for additional testing underway today and we are taking a precautionary approach by announcing some of the venues that that person attended".

"We will be reducing, till the 15th of February, the caps on worldwide arrivals in New South Wales, Western Australia, in Queensland, by 50 per cent", the Prime Minister said.

"What we do know is that this new strain is some 70 per cent more transmissible than the previous strains of the virus". It also said global passenger limits in three states will be temporarily halved.

"We are pleased that these processes that are now in place and I understand that this has been agreed to nationally now as well".

She acknowledged the pain suffered by Australian families who remain separated from their loved ones. Masks will also become compulsory for the first time in Brisbane and some surrounding municipalities, the Queensland state government said.

Dr Chant has called for a push in testing over the next week as the state works to uncover any unidentified chains of community transmission.

"It's pretty upsetting - they were quite upset and we're pretty sad not to be there", she said.

"Covid situation in Brisbane is "serious".

The 501Y.V2 variant, which originated in South Africa, has found its way across the world, with four more cases confirmed in Australia.

"I don't think a three-day lockdown is going to hurt us at all".

Nearly 13,000 tests were conducted yesterday in Queensland.

"There are no concerns that supermarket supplies are at risk during this three- day period", a spokesman said.
