Health workers nursing home residents should get vaccines first US panel COVID-19 Patients On Some Cancer Therapies May Be Contagious For Months: Study

An estimated 21 million healthcare workers and three million residents of long-term care facilities should be first in line to receive a vaccine, according to a recommendation voted on by a CDC panel of advisers yesterday.

"Within 24 hours, maybe at most 36 to 48 hours, from the approval, the vaccine can be in people's arms", Moncef Slaoui, a former GlaxoSmithKline executive, said at an event conducted by The Washington Post newspaper.

Nueces County health officials have worked out who will get the vaccine first, but after that they have to set up a delivery system to get everyone else vaccinated, and then they have to make sure people know to get a follow-up shot later on, and that shot has to be the same brand as the first one. Since mRNA vaccines have never received use outside of clinical trials, members of the public and even many physicians remain wary about them.

On Tuesday, the CDC further recommended that health care workers who have direct contact with patients and can't telework be first of the first.

Second, Talbot said she anxious that long term care facilities aren't equipped to properly monitor potential adverse effects from vaccinations.

A record almost 96,000 Covid-19 patients were reported in U.S. hospitals yesterday, according to a Reuters tally.

States have the leeway to come up with their own plan to fit their needs.

Under these guidelines, it is noteworthy people over 65, essential works, and those with underlying health conditions will have to wait for a second phase distribution, according to the ACIP, The Hill reported.

Information from Bloomberg and Reuters was used in this report. That means supply constraints may force a "sub prioritization" for a few weeks; local jurisdictions would have to select the health care workers and residents of longterm care facilities who are at highest risk.

The recommendations are not binding, but for decades they have been widely heeded by doctors, and they have determined the scope and funding of US vaccination programs.

Current estimates project around 40 million doses combined available by the end of 2020.

Long-term care facilities have accounted for about 40 percent of USA deaths during the pandemic, or about 100,000 people.

Last month, large-scale trials of a coronavirus vaccine candidate produced by Pfizer/BioNTech revealed that it is 90% effective, said the manufacturer in a statement.

"It just underlines how important it is for people to abide by these rules".

Brazil's Health Ministry also announced a similar four-stage preliminary plan for national immunization on Tuesday, saying the country will prioritize the vaccination of indigenous people, health workers and those aged 75 years and older in the battle against the coronavirus.
