NBC News Tehran bureau chief Ali Arouzi noted that Fakhrizadeh "is by far the most important Iranian nuclear scientist to be assassinated to date" and that he was even called out by name by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 2018. "As his security guards and terrorists clashed, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was seriously injured and hospitalised", the press service said in a statement adding that he died in the hospital despite efforts to resuscitate him.
Those wounded, including Fakhrizadeh's bodyguards, were later taken to a local hospital, the agency said.
Dr Fakhrizadeh has always been described by Western countries as a leader of a covert atomic bomb programme halted in 2003, which Israel and the United States accuse Teheran of trying to restore in secret. "This cowardice-with serious indications of Israeli role-shows desperate warmongering of perpetrators", Zarif wrote. IAEA inspectors now monitor Iranian nuclear sites as part of Iran's now-unraveling nuclear deal with world powers.
Fars news agency earlier reported there was a vehicle explosion in Absard town, with witnesses reporting that "three to four individuals, who are said to have been terrorists, were killed".
"We will strike as thunder at the killers of this oppressed martyr and will make them regret their action", tweeted Hossein Dehghan, also a military commander. However, Iranian media widely reported the interest that Netanyahu had previously shown in Fakhrizadeh.
"Terrorists murdered an eminent Iranian scientist today".
Fakhrizadeh led Iran's so-called "Amad", or "Hope" program.
There has been no comment from Israel on the news of the assassination.
Last year, the USA took out Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in a strike in what the Trump administration described as an act of self-defense against an "imminent" attack.
Fakhrizadeh's death will be another major blow to the Tehran regime, which has struggled amid "maximum pressure" from the Trump administration and saw the USA leave the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and impose waves of sanctions on the Islamic dictatorship.
Fakhrizadeh is thought to have headed what the United Nations nuclear watchdog and U.S. intelligence services believe was a coordinated nuclear weapons programme in Iran, shelved in 2003.
