With YouTube demonetizing the channel, OANN can no longer generate revenue from the ads placed on the video content it uploads to the platform.
Having pushed the boundaries of truth throughout the U.S. elections and well after them, One America News Network (OANN) has finally pushed too far.
"Since the start of this epidemic, we have worked to prevent the spread of harmful misinformation related to Covid-19 on YouTube", Choi said.
A spokeswoman for YouTube, the video-sharing platform owned by Alphabet's Inc's Google, said OAN had also been suspended from monetizing its videos due to repeated violations of the COVID-19 misinformation policy and other rules.
YouTube's three-strike policy provides some leeway for users to screw up before their account is terminated.
YouTube's Covid misinformation policies prohibit content that questions the existence of the virus, discourages a person from seeking medical treatment for Covid, opposes guidance from local health authorities on the pandemic, or provides unfounded medical advice or treatment.
Yet it took a video pushing lies about the coronavirus for YouTube to take action.
OAN provided VOA with a link to the video it says led to the YouTube suspension.
According to Axios, YouTube has stripped OANN's channel of its monetization eligibility.
In a statement shared with VOA, OAN said that the video flagged by YouTube was not public, but unlisted "for review by internal OAN staff only".
While we commend YouTube for finally taking action against OANN we feel it is a bit late given how much misinformation has been able to spread through that YouTube channel during and following the U.S. elections.
The conservative cable network OAN was founded in 2013 and has 1.22 million YouTube subscribers.
The news network which has been falsely claiming that Donald Trump was re-elected for weeks now was handed a temporary suspension by YouTube.
This happened to OANN after the media organization was accused of uploading a video about an allegedly "fake cure" for the coronavirus.
Trump also praised OAN in a November 15 tweet about Fox News, saying, "Many great alternatives are forming & exist", and recommending his followers try the network.
Since February, YouTube has removed 200,000 videos that it determined contained risky or misleading information about the novel coronavirus.
