Canada's 'glaring' vaccine production gaps took homemade vaccine candidates off the table

Last week, Canadian media reported that the country had signed a contract with USA companies Moderna and Pfizer to receive 6 million doses of vaccine against COVID-19 in early 2021.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned on Tuesday that Canada will receive its COVID-19 vaccines later than the countries it has ordered them from, but said his government is making the logistics preparations to distribute them as quickly as possible.

Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole said Trudeau's delays will mean more hardship for Canadians.

"The prime minister told the House that Canadians would be first in line to receive the vaccine, but today he admitted we are going to be behind many countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany", he said in the House of Commons.

"What happened to domestic manufacturing in Canada?"

Canada has secured access to hundreds of millions of does of COVID-19 vaccine candidates.

According to Canadian Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Howard Njoo, the majority of Canadians will receive the vaccines by the end of the next year. Earlier this year, it said the facility would be able to produce 250,000 vaccine doses per month as of now. "Other nations will be getting back to normal while we are twiddling our thumbs waiting for vaccine", he said.

Blanchet says the federal government should have moved sooner to help obtain manufacturing rights and beef up production capacity on Canadian soil.

It was noted that vaccines can be accepted into the country even before Health Canada has approved them. He said it could require an investment of up to $1 billion.

Dr. Paul Hodgson, associate director of the Saskatchewan facility, said they hope to have their manufacturing capacity ready late in 2021, but it is a complex process and bringing the equipment online takes time even once construction is complete.

But the COVID-19 pandemic, he said, has made that clear.
