Brazil defeated Uruguay 2-0 in Montevideo courtesy of goals from Arthur and Richarlison to maintain a flawless record and top spot in South American World Cup qualifying.

Against Uruguay, he helped to preserved the Brazilians' 100% winning record in the South American qualifiers after heading to the net on the stroke of half time. Argentina and Lionel Messi sit in second place in the table on 10 points after they defeated Peru 2-0 with first-half strikes from both Nicolas Gonzales and Lautaro Martinez.

However, the sensation team of the hour is Ecuador, which outclassed Colombia 6-1 (4-1) on matchday four. On Friday they suffered a 0-3 loss on home soil against Uruguay and the humiliation in Quito leaves coach Carlos Queiroz's future in serious doubt.

The top four teams will qualify automatically but the fifth-placed team will enter an inter-regional play-off. Uruguay rattled the woodwork twice, but failed to score.

Brazil had most of the ball, but could find no way through a well-marshalled Uruguay midfield.

After striker Luis Suarez, who tested positive for COVID-19 before the game, Uruguay also lost its second superstar prematurely because Edinson Cavani saw the red card for foul (71st).

Two minutes later, a slick through ball from the Juventus forward put Liverpool's Roberto Firmino in on goal but his left foot shot lacked the power to beat Campana. They were made to pay for their indiscipline when Edinson Cavani was shown a straight red card for a risky stomp on Richarlison's left foot following a review by the video assistant referee.

It was a cruel blow just before half time, emphasised when Uruguay skipper Diego Godin powered a header against the Brazil bar from a free kick by De La Cruz.
