Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech said last week that their experimental COVID-19 vaccine was over 90% effective in preventing infection.

Moderna, Inc. (Nasdaq: MRNA), a Cambridge, Mass. -based biotechnology company, announced that the Phase 3 study of mRNA-1273, its vaccine candidate against COVID-19, has met the statistical criteria pre-specified in the study protocol for efficacy, with a vaccine efficacy of 94.5%. While the news of a potential vaccine is tremendously exciting, our ambition in the scientific community is to ensure we leave no stone unturned in the search for a solution to help end this pandemic, said Professor Saul Faust, Director of the NIHR Southampton Clinical Research Facility and Chief Investigator for the Janssen Phase 3 trial.

In an interview on BBC One's Andrew Marr Show, Prof Sahin said he expected further analysis to show the vaccine would reduce transmission between people and stop symptoms developing in someone who has had the vaccine.

"Not only with Moderna-the government is also in communication with Pfizer, Serum Institute, Bharat Biotech and Zydus Cadila for their COVID-19 vaccine candidate in terms of safety, immunogenicity and efficacy", a senior government official said.

USA company Moderna plans to apply for approval for it's vaccine in the coming weeks.

Global infections from COVID-19 have soared past 54 million with more than 1.3 million deaths since the virus emerged in China late previous year. The same can not be said about the placebo group, however.

The vaccine was well tolerated, with the majority of side-effects classed as mild or moderate.

There were 11 people who fell severely ill, all of whom were in the placebo group. A review of solicited adverse events indicated that the vaccine was generally well tolerated. And at -4 degrees Fahrenheit (-20 degrees Celsius) it remains viable for up to six months.

Pfizer and Moderna's vaccines use the messenger RNA platform, Johnson and Johnson and AstraZeneca in partnership with Oxford University are on the live vector path while Novavax and Sanofi/ GlaxoSmithKline are building out their vaccine candidates on the recombinant protein platform. Experts have raised concerns about the distribution challenges associated with Pfizer's vaccine due to its specialized storage requirements.

The vaccine reportedly has a shelf life of up to 30 days in a commercial refrigerator and can stand being at room temperature for up to 12 hours.
