Prince Harry: Serving in the military changed my life for the better

Prince Harry Meghan Markle talks 'deeply painful process' in latest legal documents - live updates
Hannah Rogers | 20 November, 2020, 18:47

According to a report in The Guardian, part of Meghan's document submitted in court reads, "In accordance with the advice that she (Meghan) had received from the two members of the royal family, the claimant chose to write a private letter to her father in an attempt to get him to stop talking to the press".

Meghan is now in a court battle with the Associated Newspapers Limited (the Mail) for publishing parts of that letter, and she claims her privacy was violated. The letter was conveyed to reporters by Thomas himself, who is ready to testify in court against his daughter, who, as he claims, unjustly deleted him from her life.

The wife of Prince Harry is now suing The Mail on Sunday, a United Kingdom newspaper, for breach of privacy for printing out extracts of a handwritten letter she had sent to her estranged father back in 2018.

Megan insists that she had to provide personal information (including about the notorious letter), as she feared that her relationship with her father, about which so much was written in the press, would be misrepresented in the new book.

Meghan created a draft on her iPhone over several weeks, sharing it with Harry and her "trusted" Communications Secretary Jason Knauf, who gave general feedback but no actual wording, the document said.

The Duchess' legal team also denies the idea that she and Harry had final approval of Finding Freedom's contents, and refutes the rumors that they have received financial aid from taxpayer funds. Their son, Archie, was born the following year.

Meghan hasn't spoken to her parent since her wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018.

The new document also reveals that Meghan allowed someone she knew to speak to the authors of Finding Freedom, a behind-the-scenes book about her and Harry.

The documents revealed that she passed the secrets via a third party to the two royal insiders Carolyn Durand and Omid Scobie. "The lawyers insist though, "[Meghan] does not know to what extent or in what terms this one item of information concerning her communications with her father was shared with the authors". She claims that she did not cut ties with Thomas, but only convinced him to stop communicating with the press - but he did not heed her requests. However, in a ruling earlier yesterday, the judge Mark Warby said Markle did not appear to be an important witness in the case and it was inaccurate to view it as a family battle.

The privacy trial was set to begin in January 2021, but Meg's team was granted their request to delay the trial to the fall for reasons that are "confidential".
