The number of Ontarians in hospital intensive care units and on ventilators with COVID-19 took a sharp jump Thursday, reaching the level where non-emergency surgeries begin facing cancellations.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said the numbers remain "very concerning" as Ford's cabinet meets to discuss new public health measures being recommended by chief medical officer Dr. David Williams.

Lecce stressed that Ontario schools have been "remarkably successful at minimizing outbreaks" during a second wave of the virus that's seen record-breaking daily counts, most notably in Toronto and Peel Region.

Both the number of active cases and the number of people now hospitalized has decreased from yesterday, but the number of patients on ventilators and in intensive care units has increased.

"We are thinking ahead to be able to mitigate any increase of transmission in our schools because we've fundamentally, in this province, been able to keep that rate down".

In the province's long-term care homes, 619 residents now have COVID-19 and 15 new deaths have been reported today.

Peel Region is leading in the most cases for the third straight with 400 new infections reported on Friday, up from 361 the day before.

"As it's looking, these measures, they will have to be tough in the hardest-hit areas", said Mr. Ford, who also announced a COVID-19 enforcement blitz aimed at workplaces on Thursday.

The exception is Public Health Sudbury and District, which is in the yellow (protect) restriction level.

As of Wednesday, there are 670 schools in Ontario with a reported cases of COVID-19. Ottawa accounted for 22 of Wednesday's new cases, according to data shared by the province.

Meanwhile, the Canadian leading a United Nations road map for COVID-19 recovery said much human progress has been eroded by the pandemic and that now is the time to make lasting changes.

There are 12,628 active, lab-confirmed cases (down from 12,822 yesterday), and of those 526 are hospitalized, down from 535 yesterday.

Etches said schools have multiple layers of protection against COVID-19. "It is by limiting our contacts that we will be able to decrease the number of cases and thus avoid deaths".

On Thursday, the province announced inspection blitzes to help to stop the spread of COVID-19. The deaths reported in today's update include one person between the age of 60 and 79 years old, and seven people over the age of 80 years old.
