Leonid Meteor Shower 2020: Best times to see shooting stars

The Leonid meteor shower will shoot fireballs across the sky this week Leonid meteor shower will peak TONIGHT with up to 20 shooting stars an hour

However, approximately every 33 years, viewers on Earth may experience a Leonid storm that can peak with hundreds to thousands of meteors seen per hour depending on the location. Meteors will be visible from midnight through dawn, with peak viewing hours hours just before dawn on November 17.

In 2034, researchers predict that observers will have a chance to witness 2,000 meteors per hour, in a 'Leonid storm'.

Meteor showers get their name from Leo the Lion Wire, as the meteor would have come from the stars that make up the lion's mane.

This Wednesday, PAGASA said partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains may prevail over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Cagayan Valley due to the northeast monsoon or "amihan".

Meteor showers are a phenomenon that happen throughout the year, firing up across the night sky for a light show.

Known for their brightness and colour, the Leonids feature some of the fastest moving rocks of any of the annual showers - travelling at 44 miles per second.

Southcentral Alaska is expected to see clear skies early this week, according to the National Weather Service. The last Leonid meteor storm took place in 2002. There were so many meteors seen that they appeared to fall like rain.

As per the report, meteor showers are best visible when the sky is cloudless and the entire sky can be seen, with a dimly lit Moon. As the comet moves along its path, deviating slightly with each orbit, it leaves a trail of debris that spreads out in space.

A comet is a rock covered in ice, methane and other compounds. It is better to watch the meteor shower away from street lamps and illuminated street areas. Their orbits take them out of the solar system.

A meteor is what astronomers call a flash of light in the atmosphere when debris burns up. Most are so small they are vapourised in the atmosphere.

Meteors, meteors and meteors usually originate from asteroids and comets. The Earth passes through the debris fields every year and the collision of the particles with our atmosphere creates the fiery and colorful displays.
