Caribbean Cruise Cut Short Due To Covid-19

7 test positive for COVID on first Caribbean cruise since March Congress members ask CDC to bring back the No Sail order cruise ship ban

A Caribbean cruise was abruptly halted after several passengers tested positive for COVID-19.

Gene Sloan, a travel and cruise journalist on the trip documented the journey for The Points Guy.

The Miami Herald investigated COVID-19 outbreaks on cruise ships.

All passengers of the cruise were required to test negative within days of boarding, then again once they boarded.

"Passengers on the current cruise had boarded the ship on Saturday".

Seven passengers and a crew member who were aboard the SeaDream 1 now docked in Barbados are at the Harrison Point isolation centre in St Lucy with COVID-19.

SeaDream also has started new cleaning and sanitizing measures on board the ships, with the help of ultrasonic foggers used by hospitals to disinfect rooms.

I've been off and on about going on a cruise my whole life. The cruise line SeaDream Yacht Club, carried out a number of cruises in Europe this year without a hitch.

Despite the latest drama, three passengers who spoke to The Daily Beast on Thursday said the quarantine process had been surprisingly rigorous. People could still lounge by the pool, enjoying a drink by the bar, take a kayak out for a paddle or a swim. All 53 passengers are confined to their rooms. By Monday, after complaints for anxious passengers, the policy was changed to include a mask-mandate.

Not all passengers were happy about the change, Sloan wrote, with some telling him that they had specifically booked the cruise because it did not require mask-wearing.

It's still unclear how the virus found its way on to the ship.

Based on that COVID-positive result, the SeaDream said that it "advised local health authorities and set in motion its COVID response protocols to protect guests and crew".

Sloan reported that when the captain announced the sixth potential case, he added that an initial round of tests for all others aboard had come back negative. The other two are a husband-and-wife couple who shared a cabin.

"The few people I talked to seemed to understand the necessity for a quarantine ... to shut this kind of thing down", he said.

Bryant said passengers were required to have a negative PCR test to enter Barbados and underwent another test on the dock administered by the ship's doctor. But following the CDC's decision this month to lift its ban on cruise ships, Bostic told the Herald that he does not endorse the use of rapid tests because they "are not safe enough for border screening". The ship has a double capacity of 112 passengers.

He said the first suspected case, a man, had respiratory problems, and his spouse also tested positive.
