A shocking report in the Washington Post details how a significant percentage of the entire U.S. Secret Service has been forced to quarantine thanks in part to President Donald Trump's pre-election cross-country blitz.
More than 130 US Secret Service officers assigned to protect President Donald Trump have been sidelined by COVID-19, The Washington Post reported on Friday as the novel coronavirus outbreak spread at the White House.
The newspaper said the high number of people infected, or in quarantine or isolation because they were in close contact with someone who tested positive, is putting a strain on the agency.
A Secret Service spokesperson declined to comment on the precise numbers of officers or agents affected by COVID-19, citing privacy and operational security concerns.
"Trump's total disregard for the lives of his protectors, supporters, and aides shows how unsafe his extreme selfishness has become", Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) said in a statement.
First lady Melania Trump, Trump's youngest son Barron, top aide Hope Hicks, national security adviser Robert O'Brien and White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany all previously tested positive.
In response to the Post's report, the Secret Service told The Hill it "successfully carried out its protective obligations associated with the presidential campaign while fulfilling its statutory protective responsibilities", although the agency did not confirm how many employees tested positive or how many are in quarantine.
US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has repeatedly criticised the White House and the president over their handling of the pandemic, told reporters the latest outbreak was further proof of "Trump's reckless campaign schedule".
