USA 2020: Twitter labels 300,000 misleading tweets

Twitter Trojan meme Trump could be banned from Twitter once he loses his 'world leader' privileges

Twitter said on Thursday that between October 27 and November 11, it had labeled about 300,000 tweets as containing "disputed and potentially misleading" information about the election.

Twitter said 456 of these tweets were also hidden by a warning message and had their engagement limited, meaning users could not retweet, reply to or like the tweets.

For Twitter, those included more prominent warning labels on misleading or disputed claims and limiting how such claims can be shared.

"We remain vigilant and will continue working to protect the integrity of the election conversation on Twitter", he added.

That represented 0.2 percent of all USA election-related tweets during the two-week period between October 27 and November 11 - and some of those flagged were posted or retweet by President Donald Trump.

They said the enforcement actions were part of ongoing efforts to limit the spread of misleading information about election processes around the world on Twitter. Twitter has said that Trump's account will be subject to the same rules as any other user, including bans on inciting violence and posting false information.

The company announced in a November 2 tweet that it "may label Tweets, starting on election night, that make claims about election results before they're officially called".

On election day, one-sixth of his 55 tweets were deemed to contain "misinformation" and seven out of 18 have since been labeled.

"We also want to be very clear that we do not see our job as done", Legal, Policy and Trust & Safety Lead Vijaya Gadde and Product Lead Kayvon Beykpour wrote.

Some of these steps were in response to President Trump, who has repeatedly used the platform to share unsubstantiated claims about mail-in voting, voter fraud, and even the outcome of the election.

However, not all of Twitter's changes had their desired impact.

In the blog post, Twitter said it was taking more time to study the effect but that the measure would be kept in place "for now".

The prompt reduced retweeting and increased quote tweeting but collectively led to a 20% reduction in sharing tweets, the company said.

"While we had initially hoped that this would help reduce the potential for misleading information to spread on our service, we did not observe a statistically significant difference in misinformation prevalence as a result of this change", the officials wrote.

Twitter temporarily stopped recommending tweets on newsfeeds and through notifications from accounts that users don't follow.
