She Just Made Baseball History

The Marlins formally announced Ng's hiring on Twitter. Or was it 93 years?

Ng will take over a team coming off its first playoff appearance in 17 years. Billy Evans was the first to assume that title, for the Cleveland Indians in 1927. Ng moved from NYC to Los Angeles as the club's vice president and assistant general manager. Not their own fear, mind you.

Ng is the first woman to serve as a GM in the Big Four leagues in North America - NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL - and the first Asian-descent GM of an MLB team. Just like with [vice president-elect] Kamala Harris there's nothing more powerful than when you see it. But let's be sure to give most of the credit here to Ng, for spending her career building an air-tight resume in baseball and earning the respect of those in the game. She became an AGM with the Dodgers in 2001. Jean Afterman, who has been the Yankees' assistant GM since succeeding Ng almost 20 years ago, said her predecessor possesses talents that are gender-blind. In 2011, she left the Dodgers and became senior vice president of baseball operations for the majors.

"I always talk her up at owners meetings", Torre said. "That is what we call a Baseball Lifer".

In March of this year, Ng joined my radio show for our "Game Changers" segment, which honors women breaking down barriers in sport.

It's also interesting to hire somehow who has front office experience, yes, but has also been in the Commissioner's Office the last decade. There's a novelty about it, but definitely some side-glancing going on.

Her list of mentors - a who's who of baseball leadership - speaks to that goal.

The Miami Marlins have named Kim Ng as their next general manager in a historic move for Major League Baseball.

As recently as 2017, Major League Baseball received a grade of C for gender hiring practices by the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida.

Her resumé with those three teams includes eight postseason appearances, six championship series and three World Series, all with the Yankees (1998-2000).

"We are building for the long term in South Florida, developing a forward-thinking, collaborative, creative baseball operation made up of incredibly talented and dedicated staff who have, over the last few years, laid a great foundation for success", she continued.

In her statement Friday, Ng acknowledged she wasn't sure this day would come.

With the front-office glass ceiling now shattered, the question becomes how long it will take for a woman to be appointed head coach of a team in one of the major professional men's sports. "When I got into this business, it seemed unlikely a woman would lead a Major League team", she said in a statement, "but I am dogged in the pursuit of my goals".
