Google curtails free photo storage, pushes users to buy more space Unlimited Google Photo backups will be unavailable with future Pixel phones

(Pocket-lint) - Google's newly-announced change to its pricing structure for Google Photos, in which "high quality" photo storage will begin counting against people's online storage, will be applied as widely as was feared, it's confirmed.

Google One is the umbrella service for all of Google's online storage facilities (Gmail, Drive and Photos). This means that from that date, any new photo and video you upload will count toward the free 15GB storage each user receives with his or her Google account. But you can also choose to send it to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Box.

It seems that this may be a great moment to buy a new Google Pixel device if you're interested in free, unlimited Google Photos backups.

After June 1, 2021 if you're inactive in one or more of these services for two years (24 months), Google may delete the content in the product in which you're inactive. First up, head over to takeout.google.com (creative name, right?), log in, and you'll see a long list of all the stuff you have backed up in Google's servers.

Additionally, Google gives you options on creating a schedule for future backups as well. However, there are quite a few steps involved here. Of course, for most of us saving thousands of photos on Google Photos, this is frightful news and we need to figure out an alternate solution.

Under File type & size, chose if you want your export as a.zip or.tgz file. Various subscription plans are available offering different amounts of storage space, starting at US$1.99 a month for 100GB.

For me, I'd rather start weeding out bad photos in my leisure time right on my phone and trying to keep my Google storage space under control versus having to figure out how to store all the pics I just took on my last trip when I get home or risk losing everything because a drop my phone in the pool. The latter is better for those with hundreds of thousands of photos in Google Photos.
