Facebook Messenger and Instagram are getting a new mode that will auto-erase messages from a chat right after the user exits the mode on either of the phone apps. The mode will also feature enhanced security in terms of privacy, with a notification function in case one of the users takes a screenshot of the conversation. To familiarize users with the feature, Facebook added an explainer screen that appears when you first swipe up. It is a message disappearing feature of Snapchat which we will see on Instagram and FB Messenger as well in the upcoming days.
Vanish mode is exactly what it sounds like, an ephemeral method of texting that's more like Snapchat than what we'd expect from Messenger.
The Vanish Mode comes with certain options and regulations. Earlier this month, WhatsApp -which Facebook also owns-launched disappearing messages as well. Facebook has not confirmed whether this feature will be available to users in India or not. However, it is unclear if the feature will also be available for group chats. If you swipe up again, you'll return to regular chat.
Users will also be able to report individuals for Vanish Mode conduct violations.
To prevent abuse, the Vanish mode can only be activated with people you're connected to over Facebook-not random strangers. The chats remain in the system for up to fourteen days, meaning that they are not immediately removed.
However, this new feature is not yet available to everyone.
The Vanish Mode for Messenger is available for users in the U.S., and some other countries. And you can turn it on or off in the settings of any particular chat.
