United Kingdom bans travel from Denmark over new Coronavirus strain among minks

"COVID-19 infection had been registered in Denmark on 216 mink farms by November 6", the SSI said.

The Danish government announced on Wednesday that the country would cull its entire population of mink, millions of which are farmed for their fur, because of scientific data showing the virus has mutated in infected mammals and already spread to a number of people, potentially undermining the efficacy of a future vaccine. Denmark reportedly has been trying to cull infected mink since June, but has found it hard to contain infections in the animal.

"It is a dark day for all of us and for Denmark", Pedersen said, according to The Guardian.

"Of course, we must not be the cause of a new pandemic". The Netherlands plans to ban mink farming by the end of 2020.

This very sad story is developing. "We don't have any evidence at the moment".

Animal rights groups welcomed the mass cull imposed by the government, and called for a general ban on what they said was an outdated industry.

He said: "By taking further action now, closing travel corridors and requiring individuals and their households to isolate, we aim to prevent risk to Wales and the United Kingdom from this new strain".

Denmark's precautionary measures would make the new virus less likely to spread widely in humans, he said in a statement.

As in the case of live-animal meat markets, on fur farms, minks and other animals killed for their skin are confined to cramped wire cages adjacent to one another, making it very easy for infectious diseases to spread through the exchange of urine, excrement, pus, and blood.

The mutation of a virus is trivial and often harmless, according to the scientific community.

Lab tests conducted then found that this strain may have reduced response to neutralising antibodies from Covid-19, according to the WHO. "The mutating virus has spread to humans", Frederickson said.

"It must adapt to be able to use mink receptors to enter cells and so will modify the spike protein to enable this to happen efficiently", he explained.

While Denmark's prime minister fears the variant could result in threatening how well future vaccines work, Ryan and other World Health Organization officials said "we are a long way" from determining the impact on vaccines.

The Danish government said 12 people have been infected by a new strain of COVID-19 tracked back to the mink farms and slaughterhouses.

Dr James Wood, a professor of veterinary medicine from Cambridge University, cautioned that the true implication of the changes in the spike protein had not yet been fully assessed by scientists. To claim that this mutant could be resistant to a vaccine was "idiotic", he said.
