A group representing European and USA investors with a collective $30 trillion (£23 trillion) in assets urged the United States to quickly rejoin a global accord to tackle climate change on Wednesday, as a decision by President Donald Trump to leave the pact came into effect.
The delay is due to rules built into the climate agreement that were put in place should a future USA president made a decision to withdraw from the pact.
Joining of the pact means more than three-fifths of global Carbon dioxide emissions will collectively be covered by "net zero targets" by 2050 and the climate change issue would once again dominate G7 and G20 next year.
Today, the USA officially exited the Paris Climate Agreement, leaving the world's biggest climate change accords to go ahead without the participation of the planet's second-biggest carbon emitter.
Though the United States under President Donald Trump had announced his decision to withdraw from the Agreement in 2017, the formal withdrawal could technically happen only a day after the U.S. presidential election as per the UN climate body's exit procedures for the deal.
The United States still remains a party to the UNFCCC. Still, member states had to serve a 12-month notice period on the United Nations prior to exiting.
According to Article 28, paragraph 2, of the Paris Agreement, the withdrawal of the United States took into effect on November 4, 2020, one year from delivery of the notification. "It offers a meaningful yet flexible framework for action by all countries", Guterres had said.
"The science is clear that we must urgently scale up action and work together to reduce the impacts of global warming and to ensure a greener, more resilient future for us all".
"The decision to leave the Paris agreement was wrong when it was announced and it is still wrong today", Helen Mountford from the World Resources Institute (WRI), an environmental organization, told BBC. "We know that those commitments, given what the science is telling us, need to be increased", he said. It will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, next November.
As the process of counting up the voters who endorsed this major change in America's climate and energy strategy continues, the greater Biden's margin - at this writing, he leads by more than 3.5 million votes - the stronger his mandate.
