Hellscape lava planet rains rocks, suffers from supersonic winds

But they plunge to below minus 200C on the other - cold enough to freeze nitrogen. That heats up the day side to a sweltering 3,000 °C (5,432 °F), melting the surface into a vast lava ocean, 100 km (62 mi) deep.

Researchers from McGill and York University have found some of the most extreme conditions in the universe on a planet named K2-141b, where lava seas as deep as 60 miles exist.

Studying it is shedding fresh light on the evolution of Earth.

"Almost half of the planet is molten magma", said lead study author Tue Giang Nguyen, a doctoral student at York University in Toronto. There are seas of molten lava.

The planet, described in the Royal Astronomical Society's monthly notices, was detected by the Kepler Space Telescope two years ago.

While analyzing the planet's illumination pattern, scientists found that about two-thirds of the planet experiences perpetual daylight. However, on earth, both the hemispheres used to receive the sun's rays in equal proportion.

The exoplanet belongs to a subset of rocky planets that orbit very close to their star, explained the researchers, adding the extreme conditions may change the surface.

This proximity keeps it gravitationally locked in the same place the same direction is always facing it - eventually creating a thinner environment in some cases. "Our finding likely means that the atmosphere extends a little beyond the shore of the magma ocean, making it easier to spot with space telescopes", says Nicolas Cowan, a professor in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences at McGill University. "Unlike a planet like Earth, the material that makes up this planet's atmosphere is literally the same materials that make up the crust". A similar cycle also occurs on K2-141b, only instead of water there's sodium, silicon monoxide, silicon dioxide, and other vaporized rocky substances, which are carried by supersonic winds blowing in excess of 3,000 miles per hour to the planet's dark side.

On Earth, rain flows back into the oceans, where it will once more evaporate and the water cycle is repeated - in a stable cycle.

"On K2-141b, the mineral vapor formed by evaporated rock is swept to the frigid night side by supersonic winds and rocks "rain" back down into a magma ocean". That hot side has an atmosphere made of silicon dioxide, more commonly known as quartz.

The return flow of the magma ocean to the dayside is slow, meaning the mineral composition will gradually evolve.

The unpredictable situation predicted can change the surface and atmosphere permanently over time.

It is worth noting that all the rocky planets start as a lava planet, but most manage to cool down and solidify at some point. "Lava planets give us a rare glimpse at this stage of planetary evolution".

Of course, all of this remains simulated speculation for now, but the researchers say that their predictions could be checked in the near future.

The team now has data from the Spitzer Space Telescope, which should give them a first glimpse of the day and night temperatures of the exoplanet.

Scientists hope to further verify their observations when the highly-anticipated James Webb Space Telescope launches in 2021. Imagine, instead, forecasting for an alien world that's not only hundreds of light years away from us but has conditions that completely redefine the term "extreme weather".
