Germany's BKA criminal police said on Twitter that they were searching homes and businesses in the German towns of Osnabrueck, Kassel and in the district of Pinneberg near Hamburg.

In July, Nehammer said Austria had received intelligence suggesting the attacker tried and failed to buy ammunition in neighboring Slovakia.

The search warrants were obtained after the Austrian judiciary transferred information to German prosecutors, the BKA said.

On Wednesday, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz's office said President Emmanuel Macron of France, which has suffered two recent deadly attacks amid Islamist anger over the publication of satirical caricatures of Prophet Muhammad, would take part in "a video conference at the beginning of the week on the fight against Islamic terrorism and political Islam".

Neighbouring countries were helping Austrian authorities as well as Europol, the European Union's law enforcement agency, which dispatched two agents to Vienna.

The Austrian government ordered the closure on Friday of two mosques in the capital, Vienna, frequented by the gunman who shot dead four people in the city centre earlier in the week. Of those, he said four had previous terror-related convictions and several others had records.

The dual Austrian-Macedonian national had already been convicted in Austria for trying to join the extremist Islamist movement IS in Syria.

"There were, in our view, intolerable errors made in the investigation", Interior Minister Karl Nehammer told reporters.

Nehammer did not name the second country, but German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer on Thursday said there was a connection to Germany.

Police still do not know how many people were part of the attack.

After receiving the tip-off from Slovakia, Austria's domestic intelligence agencies at the federal and provincial levels made the necessary checks and sent questions back to Bratislava, Mr Ruf said.

The men were already the targets of criminal cases over terrorism offences, Swiss prosecutors said on Wednesday. The Vienna police chief said: "At the moment we are sure that there were more than one person".

The youngest was a 21-year-old, identified as Nedzip V. The others were a 24-year-old German student, who had been working as a waitress, a 39-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman.
