However, this week Royal Gazette published an update featuring an apparent u-turn on the decision: "As Miss Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi has never been a tarnished person, His Majesty has given her the title of the royal consort, military ranks and royal decorations continuously".

In July past year, Vajiralongkorn gave Sineenatra the title of chao khun phra, or royal noble consort, reviving an old palace tradition of taking a junior wife that had not been practiced for nearly a century.

The announcement, dated August 29, said she was being given back her royal and military titles. She had not been seen publicly after her fall from grace past year and her whereabouts were never made clear.

Apparently she had been "disloyal" and rivaled Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana.

Two months later, on his 67th birthday in July, King Vajiralongkorn chose to also appoint Ms Wongvajirapakdi as his consort, reviving a Thai royal tradition that had not been used since the reign of King Rama VI, who ruled until 1925.

The 35-year-old Sineenatra was named chief concubine in July 2019, making her the first official mistress of the king since the end of Thailand's absolute monarchy in 1932.

However, things took another turn in October 2019 when Wongvajirapakdi was cast out of the King's circle after accusations of "disobedience" and alleged attempts to elevate herself to the level of the Queen.

The king formally assumed the throne last May after the 2016 death of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned for 70 years.

Sineenatra was previously an army nurse before her relationship with Vajiralongkorn. The 68-year-old king has seven children by three previous marriages, all of which ended in divorce.

The controversy created quite a storm as only two months earlier, a palace website relesed photos of Sineenatra and the king holding hands, and caught in various other intimate moments.
