Other iOS 14 privacy features, such as new notifications that will show which apps have recently accessed features such as Global Positioning System location or the device's microphone, remain on track.
Apple's messaging to users, as illustrated in the latest promo images for iOS 14, doesn't give surveillance a nice ring. But few of the features Apple detailed at WWDC 2020 have the potential to cause industry-wide ripples as much as Apple's decision to limit cross-site and -app tracking of iPhone and iPad users.
The developer and mobile advertising technology world breathed a sigh of relief on Thursday after Apple announced it would postpone new privacy restrictions that promised to upend the way advertising works on iPhone apps.
The feature would require apps to explicitly ask users to permission to collect and share data about their online behavior through a unique code that identifies every iPhone. Among them is a new requirement that advertisers who employ an Apple-provided tracking identifier must now show a pop-up notification saying the app "would like permission to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies". That requirement raised fears that most people would block the tracking, making it more hard for free apps to sell the ads that generate most of their revenue. In testing, the company said it saw a 50 percent decline in Audience Network publisher revenue when ad personalization wasn't available as an option.
Apple will also stop including a complimentary pair of earbuds in the iPhone 12's packaging in order to increase demand for its already mega-popular AirPods wireless headphones. The company went on to say the anti-tracking feature could make it so that it might not make sense for Facebook to offer the tool in iOS 14.
