Protests in Washington after police fatally shoot 18-year-old

Police released a statement on Wednesday evening identifying the 18-year-old as Deon Kay and said that they had recovered two guns from the shooting incident.

"Our community is hurting, and we know that they want answers", Bowser said at a press briefing Thursday.

On Thursday, police released body camera footage that showed Kay brandishing a gun during the altercation. Officials revealed Thursday the officer who shot Kay is Alexander Alvarez, who joined the MPD in 2018. Officials say Kay threw the gun almost 100 feet away, though it's unclear from the footage if the teenager threw the gun before or after being shot.

The video showed officers approaching the vehicle before one passenger jumps out and runs away.

Police Chief Peter Newsham said: 'Uniformed police officers had information that there were guys in the neighborhood with guns, specifically. "I'm pretty sure that Deon Kay fell through multiple safety nets before yesterday afternoon".

At that point, one of the officers fired once, striking Kay in the chest and killing him. "As a response, an MPD officer just distanced his service weapon, firing a single shot".

In connection to the incident, "19-year-old Marcyelle Smith, of Southeast, DC, was found to be in possession of a handgun, He was arrested and charged for Carrying a Pistol Without a License and 18-year-old Deonte Brown, of Southeast, DC was arrested and charged with No Permit", police officials said. "I know that he's a validated gang member from the area and I know that he's had multiple touches with the criminal justice system".
