He said: 'Last year they blocked everything at the last second, so it was a project that I was excited for last year but it didn't materialise.

When asked if he would want to make a return to the Premier League, the 31-year-old replied: "It's one of those situations if those options arise it's something I would look at, for sure".

The 31-year-old played just 48 minutes of Madrid's final 12 fixtures post-lockdown last season, and was visibly short on match fitness on the worldwide stage.

"There have been other instances where we have tried to go but the club won't allow it or they have done something." - which shows Bale has remained keen to leave over the last few years.

I'm under contract, so it is in the club's hands. I'm still motivated to play football.

"But I thought it was best with potentially Sunday in mind to bring him off after 45 minutes and give Harry [Wilson], who also hasn't had much football, some minutes as well".

"We will see what happens".

'As I've said it's in the club's hands and they make it very hard, to be honest'.

And the former Tottenham man has opened to the door for a potential return to England.

Bale is on duty with Wales, who face Finland in the Nations League on Thursday, and in recent years he has made no secret of his preference for worldwide football.

Bale joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013 for a then world-record fee of £86million.

Bale has experienced plenty of highs during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, including four Champions League wins and two Liga titles.

But his star has faded in the past couple of seasons after a run of injuries, indifferent form and a scarcity of first-team opportunities.

Zidane, who has feuded with Bale throughout his two spells in charge, said the winger did not want to play in last season's Champions League last-16 second-leg tie at Manchester City.

But Bale was conspicuously on the fringes of the team's celebrations, his interaction with team-mates awkward and his ever-diminishing relationship with manager Zinedine Zidane frostier than ever. "But I don't see any club paying that salary". We will see what happens. I think at the end there was a disagreement as Madrid decided not to sell the player, because they thought he was a player who could be used and be in the starting lineup.
