COVID-19 antibodies present in patients four months after recovery

Coronavirus vaccine COVID-19 Antibodies Hold Tight for 4 Months: Study

The new study was done by Reykjavik-based deCODE Genetics, a subsidiary of the U.S. biotech company Amgen, with several hospitals, universities and health officials in Iceland.

Your body might produce antibodies to battle the novel coronavirus for four months and fade away slowly thereafter, which raises new hopes for the COVID-19 vaccine, according to a new study. The study, Humoral Immune Response to SARS-CoV-2 in Iceland, was published recently in the peer-reviewed journal, The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Out of this total, they measured antibodies in 4,222 quarantined persons exposed to SARS-CoV-2 and in 23,452 persons not known to have been exposed.

In addition, in a subset of 487 people who had more than one antibody test, the researchers found that antibody levels seemed to increase in the 2 months after diagnosis and remained at a plateau for the next 2 months. (Thousand Oaks, CA, USA), conducted the study to obtain an understanding of the nature and durability of the humoral immune response to infection by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. They tested 2.102 samples from 1,237 qPCR-positive persons obtained up to four months from diagnosis.

"Although these antibodies might provide some immunity to the COVID-19 virus, there's now not enough evidence to know how long these antibodies last or whether past infection with the virus protects you from getting another infection", the study said.

Researchers reported that antibody levels were greater in older and hospitalized clients which nearly a 3rd of individuals who had actually been contaminated reported no signs. According to The Daily Caller, researchers analyzed the blood of infected patients and healthcare workers and found that the levels of protective antibodies peaked about three weeks after the first symptoms of COVID-19 appeared.

The study is among the first to give a definitive timeframe for the protection provided by antibodies against COVID-19.

Other studies have also shown similar results. The few confirmed reports of reinfection to date also haven't ruled out that reinfection can happen even in people who have antibodies.
